Rural Healthcare and Peace of Mind

At Premier Financial Group, we believe that extraordinary healthcare is the cornerstone of a thriving community. While some see the limitations of rural healthcare as insurmountable challenges, we’re working to change the conversation around rural healthcare in Humboldt County and create lasting positive impact for our entire community. In fact, we’ve discovered that our community’s size isn’t a limitation; it’s an advantage that enables more coordinated, personalized care.

For more than a decade, we’ve been actively investing in and advocating for our local healthcare system. See how our commitment is helping build a stronger, more resilient community — and how similar approaches could transform rural healthcare across the country.

Understanding Rural Healthcare Challenges

In rural communities like ours, healthcare presents a unique set of challenges and opportunities. While some may be frustrated about limited access to specialists or the need to travel for certain treatments, Premier recognized that the relentless focus on these limitations was itself becoming a barrier to community health and growth.

Negativity and pessimism leads to a cascade of challenges beyond healthcare: unease and distrust around accessing medical care, stress for patients, and dissuading people and businesses from moving to the community. Perhaps most damaging about this attitude is that it can discourage potential hospital donors, and creates problems in healthcare recruitment and professional morale.

As we’ve learned through conversations with clients and local healthcare leaders, robust medical services are vital to a community’s physical and economic health. Without solid healthcare infrastructure, communities struggle to attract and retain residents, particularly young families and retirees who consider healthcare access a top priority when choosing where to live.

The solution is to strike a delicate balance between acknowledging the inherent limitations of rural healthcare while building upon its strengths.

Taking a Stand for “Extraordinary Rural Healthcare”

Healthcare facilities serve as economic anchors in rural areas, providing stable employment, attracting skilled professionals, and signaling to businesses and residents that a community has the essential services needed to thrive. This ripple effect makes healthcare investment one of the most impactful ways to support a rural community and economic development.

Nearly a decade ago, Premier made a bold declaration: Humboldt County has extraordinary rural healthcare.

Through our philanthropic efforts, we saw a need to stand for healthcare peace of mind. As Ginger Weber, CFPⓇ and Premier President, says, “Because we stand for our clients around their finances, we saw the connection to healthcare in our community.”

This shift from viewing local healthcare as merely adequate to recognizing it as extraordinary came from understanding the unique advantages of rural medicine. In smaller communities like Humboldt County, healthcare is often more personal. Because of the interconnected nature of small-town life, practitioners often go above and beyond to provide more comprehensive care for their patients.

This level of care manifests in numerous ways:

  • Healthcare providers who understand the community’s unique needs and limitations
  • Medical professionals who actively coordinate care across available resources
  • A commitment to finding solutions within the constraints of rural medicine
  • Personal attention that’s often harder to find in larger urban settings

The concept of “extraordinary rural healthcare” isn’t about competing with major metropolitan medical centers. Instead, it’s about recognizing and building upon the strengths inherent in rural healthcare delivery.

Creating Lasting Impact: Premier’s Philanthropic Approach

While we serve clients across the United States, a large percentage of clients live in Humboldt County. Their financial peace of mind is often tied to their healthcare peace of mind. By investing in healthcare, we’re able to support an initiative that has the broadest possible impact across our community. Since 2008, we’ve invested over $1 million in local healthcare initiatives, starting with a pivotal $100,000 donation toward a major hospital expansion project.

We’ve also developed a sophisticated approach to healthcare philanthropy that maximizes community impact. Working with Providence Hospital, we established a quasi donor-advised fund structure that allows for ongoing strategic investment in healthcare initiatives. This enables us to continue guiding how our donations are used, ensuring funds address the most pressing healthcare needs as they evolve.

Joining Forces

A cornerstone of our philanthropic strategy is inspiring others to join the cause. We regularly use matching donation challenges to encourage community participation, multiplying the impact of our own contributions.

Through regular educational meetings and events, we’ve created platforms for healthcare dialogue, bringing together medical professionals, community leaders, and residents to discuss healthcare challenges and solutions. These gatherings raise funds — but also create an informed network of healthcare advocates who understand both the challenges and opportunities in healthcare.

Addressing Systemic Challenges

Our efforts extend to addressing fundamental healthcare needs. When our community faced a shortage of family practitioners, we supported the creation of a local medical residency program through a partnership between Providence Hospital and Open Door Community Health Centers. The program now trains 18 resident physicians on a rotating basis, with several graduates choosing to remain in the community.

We’ve also recognized the growing need for mental health services, particularly in the wake of COVID-19. Our support extends to initiatives addressing this critical need, including backing plans for a new treatment center focused on mental health and substance abuse care.

Women for Wellness

Ginger Weber also helped launch Women for Wellness, a donor club that creates a substantial pool of funding for specific healthcare needs. What makes this initiative unique is its democratic approach to philanthropy — members vote on which grant requests to fund, ensuring donations align with community priorities.

Recent funded projects include:

  • Lucas chest compression machines that provide more consistent care for cardiac patients
  • Advanced bladder scanners that improve patient care and staff efficiency
  • Specialized exam table for sexual assault victims designed to better serve pediatric and disabled patients

Building Community Through Healthcare

Through our comprehensive approach to healthcare philanthropy, we’re demonstrating how a local business can catalyze meaningful change in their community. Our work shows that improving rural healthcare requires more than just financial investment — it needs strategic thinking, community engagement, and a long-term commitment to building sustainable solutions.

Weber says, “When we share this commitment with other like-minded people who care about the community, we can make a difference. It has the potential to impact everybody.”

By bringing together medical professionals, community leaders, and residents in support of healthcare excellence, we’re helping build a stronger, healthier future for Humboldt County. And we believe our approach can serve as a model for other rural areas facing similar healthcare challenges. We encourage other communities to take their own stand for extraordinary rural healthcare and discover how they too can inspire positive change through collaborative action.

Integrity and Transparency in Everything We Do

Trust isn’t typically a word people associate with financial services. In a field where honesty is hard to come by, we at Premier want to set a higher benchmark for client service and ethical conduct. That’s why we’ve made integrity and transparency the cornerstone of our practice.

Below we discuss how we put these values into practice every day and foster a culture of integrity within our firm and with clients.

Redefining Integrity in Finance

Put simply: Integrity means everything to us. We believe that it’s an all-or-nothing game; you can’t turn integrity off and on at the flip of a switch. It’s a 100% commitment that permeates every aspect of our work.

And transparency is a critical part of integrity. While regulatory bodies like the SEC require certain disclosures about conflicts of interest and fees, we take it several steps further — providing full disclosure of all fees and costs associated with our services. We don’t hide behind complex jargon; we break down every cost in clear, understandable terms. Clients come to us with varying levels of knowledge and experience and shouldn’t be left to decipher it on their own.

We also believe in being transparent about market risks and potential outcomes. We have frank conversations with our clients about the realities of investing: Markets can be volatile and changes in value are a normal part of the investment cycle.

Perhaps most importantly, we’re committed to having honest — and sometimes difficult — conversations with our clients about their financial readiness. This might mean telling a client that they’re not in a position to retire or advising against lavish spending that could jeopardize long-term financial security. While these conversations can be uncomfortable, they’re essential to fulfilling our duty to our clients.

Finally, we’re transparent about our mistakes, which are not frequent but can happen. If we make an error that costs a client money, we don’t hide it. Instead, we openly admit the mistake, explain what happened, and make the client whole financially. This level of honesty and accountability is rare in our industry, but we believe it’s the only way to truly serve clients’ best interests. We also maintain professional errors and omission (E&O) insurance to further protect clients and our firm.

Integrity from Within

Our commitment to integrity begins with our hiring practices. To ensure we bring on individuals who share our values, we promote from within or hire experienced  advisors who are committed to the fiduciary standard and understand the importance of putting client interests first.

Once on board, new hires undergo rigorous training that emphasizes the importance of integrity in our work. Ethics and core values are introduced right from the start. We hold regular team meetings and one-on-one mentorship sessions where integrity is a recurring theme, ensuring it remains top of mind for every employee.

This extends to our compensation model as well. Unlike the “eat what you kill” models common in some brokerages, which can incentivize advisors to prioritize selling products over client needs, our model includes a base salary with performance-based bonuses. This structure allows our team to focus on what’s truly best for the client, even if that means turning down business that isn’t a good fit.

In difficult market conditions, we stand by our long-term strategies, having honest conversations with clients about the importance of staying the course rather than making fear-based decisions. We’ve seen firsthand how this approach builds trust and results in better long-term outcomes for our clients.

Mutual Trust for Effective Financial Planning

While we pledge to provide transparent, integrity-driven service, we also recognize that our clients play an important role in this equation.

Just as we’re honest with our clients, we ask for honesty in return. This means being forthright about financial situations, spending habits, life changes, and long-term goals. As advisor Jeremy Sorci, CFP®, AFIM™, puts it, “If you tell me everything, this is going to work a lot better for you. Everything that you hold back is going to be a potential pitfall in the future.”

We know that discussing finances can be uncomfortable. Some clients worry about judgment, while others fear that sharing information might somehow expose them to risk. We address these concerns right from the beginning, assuring clients of our adherence to confidentiality and explaining how complete information allows us to provide the best possible advice. Just as you trust a doctor with your health or a lawyer with legal matters, trusting a financial advisor means acknowledging that you can’t be an expert in everything. Taking a “delegator” mindset allows for more productive conversations and better outcomes.

Ultimately, we view our relationships with clients as a true partnership. We bring our expertise and dedication to their financial well-being. In return, we ask for their trust, honesty, and willingness to engage in open dialogue. This two-way street of integrity creates a solid foundation for achieving financial goals and lasting peace of mind.

Building a Legacy of Trust

By upholding integrity within our firm and encouraging the same from our clients, we’re able to provide more than just financial advice. We’re able to be true partners in their financial journey.

This loyalty sets us apart in an industry often viewed with skepticism. When clients know that we’re always acting in their best interests, they can approach their financial future with confidence and peace of mind. Integrity isn’t just how we do business — it’s who we are.

The Power of Introductions

Premier Financial Group believes that trust is the cornerstone of successful financial planning relationships. Also, we understand that building trust extends beyond our interactions with clients — encompassing an entire network of professionals who help to manage their finances. That’s why introductions are a central part of our client service strategy.

The Premier team sees each client introduction as a reflection of our reputation, and we take that responsibility seriously. Done well, our introductions accelerate trust and provide a superior experience.

Creating a Network of Expertise

Comprehensive financial management often requires a team of specialized professionals, and we’ve curated a robust network of experts — like estate planning attorneys and accountants — who share our commitment to client service and excellence.

Our process for developing this network is meticulous and ongoing. We take the time to personally vet the people we refer to our clients, understanding their expertise, approach to client service, and overall fit with our philosophy of fiduciary wealth management.

Some key factors when we make referrals include:

  • Personality fit: We recognize that financial matters are deeply personal, and a good working relationship requires more than just technical expertise. We get to know our clients’ interests, communication styles, and specific goals and needs to make thoughtful introductions.
  • Common ground: We look for meaningful connections between clients and the professionals we recommend. Shared interests and experiences help establish rapport quickly and create a foundation for long-lasting professional relationships.
  • Long-term continuity: We consider the career trajectory of the professionals we recommend. For instance, when suggesting an estate planning attorney, we often recommend established professionals who are early in their careers, ensuring our clients have consistent support for years to come.

While we always strive to make perfect matches, we recognize that unexpected outcomes may occur. In the rare instance where a referral doesn’t work out as planned, we’ll quickly reassess and find a better fit.

Enhancing Trust Through Introductions

Our approach to introductions isn’t just about networking; it’s about being a valuable connector for our clients, ensuring they have access to the right expertise when they need it most. In some instances, our connections allow clients to work with professionals who might not typically take on new clients due to capacity constraints — a testament to the strength of our relationships. Some of our advisors have even joined clients in their first meetings with new financial professionals, ensuring they’re asking the right questions and providing emotional reassurance.

The impact of these introductions on a client’s financial journey can be profound. For example, we’ve had clients who inherit a substantial sum, significantly changing their financial situation. Suddenly, they’re faced with complex estate planning needs and tax considerations that go beyond their previous experience. In such cases, our ability to introduce them to a trusted estate planning attorney can make a world of difference.

However, our work doesn’t end with the introduction. Advisors offer to review drafted documents from other professionals to make sure they align with the client’s intentions and financial strategy. Addressing any issues before documents are finalized saves clients time, money, and potential complications in the future.

This level of involvement extends to various aspects of our clients’ financial lives. We’ve helped clients find appropriate healthcare providers, real estate agents, and home contractors. We’re here to support clients in all aspects of their lives, not just their finances.

During challenging circumstances, such as illness or the loss of a loved one, it’s important to have a trusted advisor who can step in and help manage finances. Our established relationships with clients’ family members, built through thoughtful introductions over time, allow for seamless transitions during difficult life transitions.

Building Bridges for Financial Peace of Mind

The network of trust and expertise we’ve developed over time creates an environment where clients feel supported and confident in their financial decisions, providing a level of peace of mind that goes beyond what traditional financial planning alone can offer.

Our team has become not just advisors, but connectors, helping our clients navigate the professional services they need to achieve their goals and secure their financial future. They know that they have a team of professionals working collaboratively on their behalf, with their best interests at heart.

Beyond Indexing: Our Investment Management Philosophy

Premier’s investment philosophy is grounded in a rigorous, evidence-based approach. Our methodology is the result of decades of academic research and practical experience, designed to capture the full potential of global markets while effectively managing risk.

Below, we’ll explore common investment strategies and how our approach represents a thoughtful evolution of passive investing principles, tailored to meet the unique needs of our diverse clientele.

Active Investing

Active investing is an approach where fund managers attempt to outperform the market by selectively picking stocks. While this aggressive strategy may seem appealing at first glance, it comes with several drawbacks:

  • Emotionally Driven Decision-Making: Active managers often make decisions based on market trends or gut feelings, leading to reactionary choices that may not align with long-term investment goals.
  • Concentrated Risk: As Ginger Weber, CFPⓇ and Premier President, points out, active managers typically focus on a limited number of companies — sometimes as few as 30. This concentration increases the risk of significant losses if a few companies underperform.
  • High Costs: Actively managed funds typically charge higher fees to cover the costs of research and frequent trading. These fees can significantly eat into returns over time.
  • Cash Drag: Active funds often keep a portion of their assets in cash to handle redemptions or to wait for buying opportunities. This idle cash isn’t actively working for investors and can drag down overall returns.
  • Chasing Returns: Many active managers fall into the trap of chasing past performance, where they see what did well historically and buy more of it. This often leads to buying high and selling low, contrary to successful investing principles.
  • Lack of Consistency: The performance of actively managed funds is highly variable. A fund that outperforms one year may significantly underperform the next, making it difficult for investors to maintain a consistent long-term strategy.

Index Funds

Index funds are investment vehicles that aim to track and replicate the performance of a specific market index.

Ginger explains, “Index funds offer a simple way for investors to gain exposure to a broad range of stocks or bonds in a single asset class, typically at a lower cost than actively managed funds.”

Index funds offer several benefits over actively managed funds. They tend to provide more long-term stability, as broadly invested funds typically have more consistent results compared to actively managed funds, which can experience increased volatility due to their tendency to concentrate in particular positions or industries. Index funds are also generally more tax-efficient due to their low turnover, generating fewer taxable events.

Moreover, passive index funds typically keep minimal cash reserves, ensuring that all your money is working for you. They also maintain a consistent mix of assets based on their target parameters, providing specific risk and return characteristics that are balanced against the other portfolio components. This helps investors effectively manage inherent risk.

However, traditional index funds still have limitations. They can be subject to reconstitution, where changes to the index can lead to problematic trading activity. Additionally, while they offer broad market exposure, they may not capture the full potential of the market or adequately manage risk for individual investors’ needs.

Premier’s Approach

As part of our Fiduciary+ commitment, we’ve developed an investment approach that utilizes structured asset class portfolios. This allows us to capture the advantages of a passive strategy while including asset classes that historically offer higher returns over the long-term. Each portfolio is tailored to align with the specific goals and needs of each client.

Our strategy goes beyond indexing. Ginger explains, “We’re not doing pure indexing. Indexes are made up benchmarks by the industry. But the Dow Jones Industrial Index, for example, is only 30 companies.” Instead, our approach involves investing in over 10,000 companies globally, providing true diversification.

Additionally, we’re embracing the industry trend towards Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs). ETFs offer several advantages over traditional mutual funds, including greater cost efficiency and tax benefits. We’re actively incorporating ETFs into our client portfolios to leverage their benefits, continuously striving to optimize long-term performance while minimizing unnecessary costs and taxes.

We believe that being proactive rather than reactive to market movements is crucial for long-term investment success. Our approach emphasizes steadiness and discipline, avoiding hasty — and harmful — reactions to volatile markets.

This principle is so fundamental to our practice that one of our founders, Ron Ross, Ph.D., wrote “The Unbeatable Market” to explain it in depth. In his book, he shares how an index-type approach to investing helps to manage most forms of investment risk. The one inherent risk we can’t eliminate is market risk. As an investor, you will always face some level of market risk, but as Ron explains, it is a risk that tends to be well compensated in the long run. Many of the other investment risks that investors endure are often uncompensated risks, meaning they are risks usually not worth taking.

Dimensional Funds

Premier has cultivated a strong relationship with Dimensional Fund Advisors, one of the largest investment firms in the United States that applies academic research to practical investing. Dimensional constructs asset-class funds that go beyond simple indexing, offering a full range of equity and fixed income strategies designed to target higher expected returns. It is a nuanced approach that aims to capture the benefits of indexing while addressing some of its shortcomings.

Our relationship with Dimensional is built on a mutual commitment to evidence-based investing and shared values, not financial incentives. “No money passes between us and Dimensional,” Ginger says. “We have no obligation to use them — our only obligation is to our clients. We choose Dimensional because their approach aligns with our philosophy and benefits our clients.”

Moreover, we invest for our team and our company retirement plan in the same Dimensional portfolios as our clients, demonstrating our confidence in the strategies we recommend. We literally put our money where our mouth is.
